Master’s Thesis at the University of Basrah Explores Reform in Contemporary Iraqi Thought (1958–1979)
A master’s thesis at the University of Basrah examined “Reform in Contemporary Iraqi Thought, 1958–1979: Social Reform as a Model.”
The thesis, submitted by the student Jasim Rumi Jasim, aims to explore the concept of social reform following the overthrow of the monarchy in 1958 and the beginning of the republican era (1958–1979). This turning point marked a critical moment that provided intellectual and political elites with the opportunity to articulate their reformist visions across various domains, including sectarian issues, education, women’s affairs, migration, and others.
The study is organized into three chapters in which the researcher discusses the clarification of key concepts, the most prominent issues of social reform in Iraq between 1958 and 1979, as well as education and migration during the same period.
