University of Basrah Discusses First International PhD Dissertation in the Department of Arabic Language
As part of the “Study in Iraq” initiative, the College of Arts at the University of Basrah witnessed the defense of a distinguished doctoral dissertation by international student Sadiq Noor Mohammed Eidi from the Islamic Republic of Iran. The dissertation, titled “War in Iraqi and Iranian Novels: A Comparative Cultural Study in the Narratives of the Oppressed”, marked the first international PhD defense in the Department of Arabic Language.
The dissertation examined selected models of Iraqi–Iranian war novels from a humanistic perspective that reveals the catastrophic consequences of war. It included an analytical chapter addressing war literature and the war novel in terms of history and formation, along with an in-depth study of the significance of narrative elements. The research also explored the portrayal and role of women in war novels, as well as a comprehensive discussion of minority literature and its cultural and social dimensions.
The study concluded that the novels under review gravitate toward humanity and life, advocating values of peace away from ideology, and presenting a cultural vision that reinforces human commonality despite the harshness of conflict.
This defense underscores the academic leadership of the University of Basrah in attracting international students and promoting cultural dialogue between Iraq and Iran through the gateway of scientific research.
