University of Basrah Organizes a Workshop on Foreign Ownership of Real Estate in Iraq
The College of Law at the University of Basrah organized a workshop addressing the minimum conditions for foreign ownership of real estate in Iraq.
The workshop aimed to highlight Article (23/1/3) of the Permanent Constitution of Iraq (2005), which stipulates that Iraqis have the right to own property anywhere in Iraq, while non-Iraqis may only own movable property unless otherwise provided by law.
The workshop included a lecture delivered by Dr. Najat Abdul Muneim Marzouq, a faculty member at the College, who explained that most countries restrict foreigners from owning real estate for various reasons, primarily security and economic considerations, in addition to matters concerning state sovereignty over its territory. Consequently, each state retains the authority to permit or prohibit foreign ownership of property within its borders.
