University of Basrah Organizes a Workshop on Biosafety
The College of Pharmacy at the University of Basrah organized a workshop titled "Biosafety in Research Laboratories" for graduate students. This workshop was part of the CPRN course directed by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
The workshop aimed to establish rules and procedures that reduce the risks associated with handling microorganisms and their products in general, as well as clarify international laws and regulations related to biosecurity.
The workshop included a lecture delivered by Dr. Zuhair Ghaleb Al-Shaheen, a lecturer at the College of Pharmacy. He addressed the most prominent risks that researchers may face in laboratories, including pathogenic microorganisms and the toxins produced by some of them. He also discussed methods for handling laboratory animals and clinical samples, such as blood, and ways to safely dispose of them to maintain the safety of workers and prevent their spread outside the work environment.
The workshop recommended the need to enhance the culture of biosafety and security among researchers and to hold ongoing training courses for graduate students to introduce them to the most important requirements for personal protection within laboratories.
