University of Basrah Faculty Member Receives Patent in Chemical Engineering
Dr. Nours Talib Jassim, a faculty member at the College of Engineering, University of Basrah, was awarded a patent in chemical engineering for the synthesis of a (-1,6) naphthyridine derivative through a one-step reaction of a ternary mixture consisting of 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, malononitrile, and 4-aminopyridine, using secondary magnesium oxide as a catalytic agent to produce the compound 2-amino-4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1,6-naphthyridine-3-carbonitrile.
Dr. Jassim stated that the synthesized compound was characterized using infrared (IR) spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) for both hydrogen and carbon atoms.
She added that the synthesized compound demonstrated multifunctional enhancement properties for medium-grade lubricating oils when blended with a type 60 stock base oil supplied by the Midland Refineries Company / Dora Refinery. The compound acted as a corrosion inhibitor, anti-rust, and antioxidant, as confirmed by ASTM D130, ASTM D665, and 280-P tests, respectively. Additionally, other oil properties, such as the viscosity index (VI), pour point (P.P.), and total base number (TBN), showed slight improvements.
