University of Basrah Holds an Introductory Lecture on the International Geodiversity Day
The Natural History Museum at the University of Basrah organized an introductory lecture on the occasion of the International Geodiversity Day under the slogan “ONE EARTH… MANY STORIES.” The lecture aimed to raise awareness about the importance of geodiversity and its role in environmental protection and the sustainable development of natural resources.
The lecture was delivered by Dr. Basim Hameed Sultan, a faculty member at the College of Science and a member of the Iraqi Geological Reserves Experts Group. He discussed geological preserves and geodiversity, highlighting Jabal Sinam Reserve in Basrah, its approximate historical formation, and the types of rocks found there. He emphasized the importance of preserving geological heritage and promoting scientific and environmental tourism.
This lecture is part of the museum’s awareness-raising activities aimed at enhancing scientific culture among students and the public, and highlighting the vital role of geology in understanding Earth’s history and protecting its resources.
