University of Basrah Organizes a Workshop on Hemorrhagic Fever in Iraq
The College of Arts at the University of Basrah organized a workshop on emerging epidemic phenomena in Iraq, including the issue of hemorrhagic fever.
The workshop aimed to raise awareness about the causes behind the spread of hemorrhagic fever, which has been endemic in Iraq for decades but has recently turned into an epidemic after spreading in several provinces, particularly in the southern regions.
Several research papers were presented during the workshop, in which researchers highlighted the main causes behind the disease’s spread, such as the suspension of anti-vector campaigns during the COVID-19 pandemic, favorable climatic conditions for vector proliferation, and the widespread practice of random animal slaughter in streets and residential areas outside official slaughterhouses—all of which have significantly contributed to the transmission of infection. Additionally, the researchers pointed out the lack of public health awareness among citizens regarding the dangers of the disease and methods of prevention.
