A Higher Diploma Research at the University of Basrah Discusses Maternal Mortality Rates in Basrah Province
A higher diploma research conducted at the College of Medicine, University of Basrah, examined the maternal mortality rate (MMR) in Basrah Province during the year 2024.
The study, presented by student Sarah Kareem Ibrahim, aimed to estimate the maternal mortality rate in Basrah Province for 2024, identify both direct and indirect causes of death, and analyze the associated demographic and obstetric factors.
The research concluded that maternal mortality rates in Basrah Province have shown a concerning increase, with the vast majority of these deaths being preventable. The findings highlight systemic gaps in access to healthcare services, the quality of antenatal care, and the adequacy of emergency care during childbirth—particularly in peripheral areas.
