University of Basrah Organizes Seminar on Methods to Control Stray Animals
The College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Basrah organized a seminar on proper methods to reduce and control stray animals, in cooperation with the Veterinarians Syndicate in Basrah, and with the participation of several animal welfare advocates.
During the seminar, Dr. Kamal Al-Din Mahlel explained that outdated legislations prescribing the killing of stray animals are inhumane, emphasizing that it is the veterinarian’s duty to seek alternative solutions for sheltering these animals instead of euthanizing them.
Dr. Naseer Sadiq, Director of the Spring of Life Organization, also stressed the importance of adopting compassionate approaches toward stray animals and promoting a culture of mercy rather than random killing.
In his remarks, Dean of the College, Dr. Jalal Yaseen Mustafa, highlighted the importance of finding humane and ethical solutions for managing stray animals and rejecting extermination methods. He noted that the growing number of strays poses a real challenge to the community, requiring joint cooperation among concerned authorities to establish effective mechanisms that ensure environmental balance and protect public safety.
