Postgraduate Diploma Research at the University of Basrah Examines Iron Deficiency Among Pregnant Women
A postgraduate diploma research project at the College of Medicine, University of Basrah, examined iron deficiency among pregnant women in Basrah Governorate.
The study, presented by student Nawal Mohsen Hassoun, aimed to determine the prevalence of iron deficiency among pregnant women, evaluate the effectiveness of current screening methods, and identify the main risk factors contributing to iron deficiency during pregnancy in Basrah.
The research concluded that the prevalence of iron deficiency is notably high among pregnant women in Basrah, with 85% showing reduced serum ferritin levels. Contributing factors include inadequate prenatal care, poor adherence to nutritional supplements, short intervals between pregnancies, and prolonged breastfeeding periods.
