University of Basrah Organizes a Seminar on Scholarly Families in the Basra District
The Center for Basra and Arabian Gulf Studies at the University of Basrah organized a seminar entitled “Scholarly Families in the Basra District: The Al-Suwaij Family as a Model.”
The seminar, presented by Dr. Hameed Silawi Lafta, highlighted the Al-Suwaij family as one of the notable families that contributed to strengthening scholarly values and enriching Basra’s intellectual heritage. The discussion reviewed the history of the family’s distinguished scholars and their prominent status within society and the city’s cultural memory. Among them were the prominent jurist and scholar Sayyid Muhammad Al-Suwaij (1270 AH), Sayyid Ahmad Al-Suwaij (1317 AH), and the poet and preacher Sayyid Mahdi Al-Suwaij (1423 AH). The last of them was Sayyid Muhammad Zaki Al-Suwaij, a distinguished scholar who survived several assassination attempts during the former regime.
