University of Basrah Organizes a Seminar on the Psychological and Social Factors Leading to Extremism and Terrorism
The College of Education for Women at the University of Basrah organized an awareness seminar titled “The Psychological and Social Factors Leading to Extremism and Terrorism.”
The seminar aimed to shed light on the main psychological and social causes behind the phenomenon of extremism and terrorism, highlight the university’s role in promoting awareness and moderate thinking among students, and emphasize the importance of national belonging while reinforcing the values of tolerance and coexistence in society.
Presented by Dr. Sarah Ibrahim, Lecturer Mutab Abdulhussein, and Lecturer Maysaa Sabri Jassim, the seminar discussed the psychological factors associated with feelings of frustration and loss of identity and their impact on the growth of extremist ideologies.
The seminar concluded that social factors, along with the roles of family, school, and the surrounding environment, play a decisive part in shaping or preventing extremist behaviors. It also emphasized that university students play a major role in combating extremism and terrorism through intellectual awareness and positive participation in educational activities, stressing the importance of national identity in protecting youth from deviant ideologies and strengthening their sense of belonging to the homeland.
