University of Basrah Discusses Obstetric Outcomes Among Low-Risk Pregnant Women
A Higher Diploma research project at the College of Medicine, University of Basrah, examined obstetric outcomes among low-risk pregnant women.
The study, conducted by student Asmaa Hassan Khuneifer, aimed to compare maternal and neonatal outcomes, labor interventions, and determine the onset of active labor at 4 cm versus 6 cm cervical dilation.
The research concluded that admission at 4 cm was associated with longer labor duration, increased use of oxytocin, and a higher rate of cesarean sections due to poor progress, whereas admission at 6 cm showed better readiness for labor. Overall, cesarean delivery rates, maternal complications, and neonatal outcomes were similar, with one neonatal death reported in the 4 cm group.
