Master’s Thesis at the University of Basrah Explores Point of View in James Joyce’s Ulysses
The College of Education for Human Sciences at the University of Basrah examined a master’s thesis that explored the nature of narrative interaction in James Joyce’s novel Ulysses through a stylistic analysis based on Susan Lanser’s model for studying point of view.
The thesis, presented by Shahad Jabbar Abdul-Hussein, aimed to investigate the manifestations of point of view in the novel using Lanser’s narrative discourse model. The study sought to reveal how the elements of this model contribute to shaping narrative awareness and constructing the novel’s perspective.
The research included a detailed stylistic analysis of the narrative structure and the main stages of the plot, demonstrating that the application of Lanser’s model provided a deeper understanding of narrative mechanisms and offered a comprehensive interpretation of point of view in Ulysses. This, in turn, enhances readers’ appreciation of the complex narrative techniques that characterize Joyce’s work.
