University of Basrah Holds Seminar on Beneficial, Therapeutic, and Pathogenic Microorganisms
The College of Nursing at the University of Basrah organized a scientific seminar on beneficial and therapeutic microorganisms.
The seminar, presented by Dr. Kholoud Abdul Kareem Hussein, aimed to educate nursing students that not all microbes are pathogenic—only about 5% cause disease, while the rest are considered normal flora. Among these are therapeutic bacteria known as probiotics, which many people are unaware of despite their significant health benefits. These beneficial microbes act as immune boosters and produce essential metabolic compounds throughout their life cycle, including vital vitamins and minerals needed by the body.
The seminar recommended increasing the consumption of probiotic-rich foods, in addition to using probiotic capsules that are available as approved dietary supplements.
