University of Basrah Organizes Scientific Workshop on the Effect of Volatile Compounds on Plant Responses
The College of Agriculture at the University of Basrah organized a scientific workshop entitled “The Role of Volatile Compounds in Plant Responses to Environmental Conditions”, aiming to introduce these organic compounds released by plants into the air, soil, and water, and to highlight their role in environmental interactions.
The workshop, presented by Dr. Ward Hantoosh Neama, explained the vital functions of volatile compounds, including their role in protecting plants against fungal and bacterial infections, helping them tolerate environmental stress, and attracting beneficial insects.
The workshop also addressed the mechanisms by which plants utilize these compounds for both direct and indirect defense, as well as their role in sending chemical signals that indicate the plant’s needs when exposed to stressful conditions.
