University of Basrah Organizes Discussion Session on Linguistic Diversity in Iraq
The Basrah and Gulf Studies Center at the University of Basrah organized a discussion session entitled “Linguistic Diversity in Iraq: The Dialectic of Identity and Belonging.”
Presented by Rasha Muslim Yaqoub and Aliya Hadi Salem, the session aimed to understand Iraq’s diverse linguistic landscape, explore the relationship between different languages and the cultural identities of various communities, and discuss how to manage this diversity in a way that strengthens a unified national identity while reducing tensions related to linguistic affiliation.
The session addressed linguistic diversity in Iraq, highlighting the variety of languages and dialects as a cultural heritage and civilizational asset. It examined the impact of this diversity on shaping identity and belonging, while also discussing the challenges and opportunities that linguistic variety presents within Iraqi society.
