University of Basrah Hosts Scientific Seminar on Improving Neonatal Care Outcomes
The College of Medicine at the University of Basrah, in collaboration with the Pediatrics Department at Al-Sayyab Teaching Hospital, organized a scientific seminar entitled “From Weakness to Strength” aimed at improving neonatal care outcomes.
The seminar sought to provide participants with the latest knowledge on managing critical neonatal conditions, while promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and experience-sharing among various neonatal specialties, including cardiology, neurology, audiology, and ophthalmology, to enhance care outcomes for newborns.
The seminar recommended administering two doses of betamethasone to all pregnant women with gestational age under 34 weeks who are expected to deliver within 48 hours, due to its role in reducing morbidity and mortality among preterm infants. It also emphasized working closely with obstetricians to minimize deliveries before 38 weeks unless medically necessary, and highlighted the management of refractory neonatal seizures through the use of intracranial monitoring devices in the neonatal intensive care unit.
