University of Basrah Holds a Scientific Lecture on the Effects of Bariatric Surgery on Oral Health
The College of Dentistry at the University of Basrah held a scientific lecture titled “The Effects of Bariatric Surgery on Oral Health.”
The lecture aims to raise awareness among students and healthcare personnel about the relationship between bariatric surgery and oral health, enhance their understanding of the body’s changes following such procedures, and enable them to provide appropriate preventive guidance to patients to help maintain healthy teeth and gums.
The lecture, delivered by Dr. Rafidah Majeed Abdul-Hussein, presented the effects of bariatric surgery on oral health six months after the operation. She explained both the positive and negative impacts on the gums and oral tissues, highlighting the main causes of adverse effects—most notably deficiencies in essential nutrients such as vitamins and minerals, which may affect gum health and lead to inflammation or other oral issues in some patients.
