University of Basrah Holds Seminar to Curb the Phenomenon of Suicide
The College of Veterinary Medicine, in collaboration with the University Counseling Center at the University of Basrah, organized an awareness seminar titled “Suicide: Causes and Interventions.”
The seminar aimed to raise students’ awareness of the phenomenon of suicide among youth in Iraq by analyzing its causes and presenting comprehensive strategies to address it and mitigate its repercussions.
The session included lectures delivered by instructors Eman Qasim from the College of Veterinary Medicine and Noor Kati’ from the University Counseling Center. They highlighted the psychological motivations behind this phenomenon, primarily depression and chronic anxiety, along with social and cultural factors, including certain patterns of upbringing that may increase psychological pressure on young people.
The seminar emphasized the need for community-wide efforts to curb this phenomenon, and recommended continuous monitoring of youth, organizing their time, and engaging them in constructive and beneficial activities as a primary preventive measure.
