University of Basrah Organizes Lecture on Human Rights and Environmental Protection
The Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah organized an awareness lecture titled “Human Rights to a Clean and Pollution-Free Environment.”
The lecture aimed to raise awareness about environmental pollution, linking daily practices to their environmental impacts, and providing individuals with the tools necessary to contribute to environmental preservation and policy-making.
Delivered by Dr. Mohammed Mahdi Mohammed Yahya, the lecture emphasized that access to a healthy and clean environment is a fundamental human right and a prerequisite for the full enjoyment of other rights, including the right to life, health, food, and water. It highlighted the correlation between environmental degradation and the violation of human rights and stressed that protecting the environment requires joint efforts from governments, civil society, and the private sector. Furthermore, it underlined the importance of ensuring that laws and policies effectively safeguard the environment while respecting the rights of all members of society, particularly vulnerable groups.
