A master’s thesis at the College of Education for Women at the University of Basrah examined the theme of identity in the poetry of Nazik Al-Malaika.
The thesis, submitted by Zahraa Muslim Yaqoub, aims to uncover the dimensions of identity in the poet’s works and highlight their role in shaping her intellectual, social, and cultural vision.
The study included an introduction and several chapters. The introduction traced the development of the concept of identity in human thought and poetic discourse, addressing its linguistic and terminological dimensions as well as its interpretations in sociology and psychology.
The first chapter discussed the cognitive foundations of identity in Al-Malaika’s poetry by reviewing her upbringing, cultural environment, early education, scholarly activity, and exposure to foreign literature.
The second chapter focused on social identity, analyzing the influence of social customs and phenomena.
The third chapter examined cultural identity, emphasizing the presence of Arabic poetry, holy scriptures, myths, and history within her poetic experience.
The fourth chapter presented the manifestations of identity in her poetry through three main themes: collective identity, ideological identity, and cultural identity.
