Master’s Thesis at the University of Basrah Examines Narrative Inquiry in Ulysses
A master’s thesis at the College of Education for Human Sciences at the University of Basrah explored “The Nature of Narrative Interaction in Ulysses*” by the Irish writer James Joyce.
The thesis, submitted by student Shahad Jabbar Abdul Hussein, aimed to investigate the manifestations of point of view in Ulysses based on Susan Lanser’s model for analyzing narrative discourse.
The thesis included a stylistic and narrative analysis and interpretation of the novel’s main plot stages, noting that applying Lanser’s model provided a deeper understanding of narrative mechanisms and offered a comprehensive interpretation of point of view in Ulysses. This contributed to presenting a new perspective on Joyce’s narrative structure and highlighted the novel’s broader role in reshaping modernist literature.
