University of Basrah Organizes a Scientific Seminar on the Fundamentals of Beekeeping
The College of Agriculture at the University of Basrah organized a scientific seminar entitled “Fundamentals of Beekeeping.”
The seminar aimed to develop participants’ skills in managing apiaries according to scientific principles and to raise awareness of the environmental and economic importance of honeybees.
The seminar, delivered by Dr. Mahmoud Shaker Hashim and Dr. Amjad Abbas Fadel, included an explanation of the components of the beehive, tools used for hive inspection and honey extraction, as well as an overview of various bee products such as honey, beeswax, royal jelly, and pollen.
The speakers also addressed methods for improving standard traits in honeybees through queen rearing.
The seminar concluded with recommendations emphasizing the importance of selecting hives with standard specifications for the production of high-quality queens, thereby enhancing the sustainability of beekeeping and achieving positive economic and social returns.
