University of Basrah Enhances Field Experience in the Internationally Significant Al-Chibayish Marshes
In pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals and in line with growing international attention, the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Basrah, in cooperation with the Al-Chibayish Marshes Organization, organized an educational field practice for fifth-year students, accompanied by a number of faculty members and the college’s Sustainable Development Committee.
The activity aimed to provide students with hands-on practical experience and to familiarize them with the unique marshland environment, including its livestock resources and the distinctive species of birds and fish that have led to the marshes being recognized as internationally protected tourism areas. Students also gained insight into the living conditions of local communities in this vital region.
The field practice included a visit to the organization’s veterinary clinic, where students learned about the procedures and mechanisms used for examining and treating animals, in addition to administering preventive vaccinations. These services are provided free of charge to encourage livestock breeders, protect the marshland environment, and promote the development of its animal resources, particularly the marsh buffalo, and to prevent animal mortality.
The head of the Al-Chibayish Marshes Organization, Mr. Raad Al-Assadi, expressed his pleasure at the visit of the college delegation and offered special encouragement to the students, considering them part of the emerging generation of veterinary professionals supporting the region and revitalizing the marshes, which are regarded as “the lungs of the country” and a fundamental pillar of its environment.
