University of Basrah Organizes a Course on International Environmental Agreements
The Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah organized a course on international environmental agreements.
The course aimed to build participants’ capacities in understanding the international legal framework for environmental protection, with a focus on major agreements such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Convention on Biological Diversity.
The course, delivered by faculty member Dr. Mahmoud Shaker Hashem, introduced participants to international environmental agreements—legally binding treaties between countries designed to address shared environmental challenges such as climate change, pollution, and biodiversity conservation. Key agreements covered included the Paris Agreement, the Montreal Protocol (Ozone), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and treaties on hazardous materials such as the Basel, Rotterdam, and Minamata Conventions. These agreements facilitate cross-border coordination and establish frameworks for international cooperation to protect natural resources and ensure a sustainable environmental future for humanity. The course also highlighted how these global commitments can be translated into local and regional policies and practices, and emphasized the role of media in raising public awareness on these critical issues.
