University of Basrah Participates in a Conference on the Impacts of Climate Change
Two faculty members from the Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah—Dr. Hassan Khalil Hassan and lecturer Zainab Fadel Al-Tamimi—participated in a conference titled “The Role of Civil Society in the Integrative Process to Address the Impacts of Climate Change,” organized by the Popular Relief Organization.
Their participation included presenting a research paper entitled “Integration Between Government Administration and Community Initiatives in Addressing the Climate-Induced Water Crisis in Basrah: A Case Study.” The paper focused on the role of community initiatives in supporting governmental efforts to improve water resources management and mitigate the impacts of climate change. It also discussed mechanisms for strengthening integration among relevant stakeholders to achieve water sustainability in the governorate.
The research aimed to identify the pivotal roles and practical contributions of civil society in Basrah in confronting climate change impacts, as well as to examine the obstacles limiting the effectiveness of this role—particularly with regard to achieving climate justice. The paper further proposed practical solutions for policymakers and civil society organizations to enhance cooperation and increase effectiveness.
