University of Basrah Organizes a Workshop on a Type of Genital Bacteria in Women
The Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah organized an awareness workshop titled “Concept of Genital Mycoplasmas and Their Prevalence in Women.”
The workshop aimed to educate women about this sexually transmitted infection, which often remains asymptomatic but can lead to serious complications, emphasizing accurate diagnosis and effective treatment to address antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains.
The workshop, presented by Dr. Reham Mohammed Mustafa, covered the concept of genital mycoplasmas—referred to as “super bacteria”—which can cause severe reproductive health issues in women. It also addressed modern diagnostic techniques (NAAT), including cervical swab collection, determining the need for testing, and the infection’s association with cervicitis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), ectopic pregnancy, preterm birth, and low birth weight in newborns.
Furthermore, the workshop reviewed antibiotic treatment options, guidance for treating sexual partners, and highlighted the importance of regular screening, particularly for individuals with risk factors, to reduce the spread of infection.
