University of Basrah Organizes a Training Course on Shrimp Farming
The Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah organized a training course on shrimp farming.
The course aimed to explain methods for producing high-quality shrimp in commercial quantities while ensuring profitability and environmental sustainability. Achieving these goals requires mastering a series of precise technical and administrative processes.
The course, delivered by Dr. Tariq Khattab Yassin, introduced participants to the shrimp life cycle and the most important commercially available local species, such as penaeid shrimp, along with their environmental and nutritional requirements. It also covered larval rearing techniques, the care of juvenile shrimp in hatcheries and ponds, and the control of rearing conditions, including temperature and salinity. In addition, the course presented various types of industrial and natural feeds to enhance growth rates, as well as strategies for disease and predator management to reduce losses. Furthermore, it analyzed the challenges facing shrimp farms in the region, such as climate change, and proposed practical solutions for adaptation and sustainable growth. The course also emphasized the application of modern innovations in breeding and hatchery practices, provided participants with the necessary steps to ensure the economic viability of shrimp farming projects, and discussed the development of effective marketing strategies.
