University of Basrah Organizes a Panel Discussion on Human Development and Human Poverty in Iraq
The Basrah and Arabian Gulf Studies Center at the University of Basrah organized a panel discussion entitled “Human Development and Human Poverty Indicators in Iraq (2005–2024): An Analysis of the Implications and Significance of United Nations Development Programme Reports.”
The discussion aimed to provide a conceptual overview of human development and human poverty indicators in Iraq, highlighting their trends during the specified period, based on reports issued by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The session, presented by Dr. Bashir Hadi Ouda, addressed the historical development of the concepts of human development and human poverty, as well as the maturation of their meanings within the annual Human Development Reports since the publication of the first report in 1990.
The discussion also emphasized the importance of the Human Development Index (HDI) in measuring the expansion of people’s choices in the areas of income, health, and education, in addition to its linkage to human rights, scientific, and technological dimensions. It further explained that the Human Poverty Index (HPI) reflects the extent of deprivation and shortcomings in human development. United Nations reports indicate that Iraq is classified among countries with a medium standard of living, while experiencing variability and fluctuations in human development and human poverty indicators over recent years.
