University of Basrah Organizes a Scientific Seminar on the Management of Medical Waste and Its Health and Environmental Risks
The College of Dentistry at the University of Basrah organized a scientific seminar entitled “Medical Waste Management: Health and Environmental Risks and Control Mechanisms.”
The seminar aimed to enhance scientific and professional awareness of the risks associated with medical waste, particularly chemical, biological, and radioactive waste, and to clarify the scientific and legal foundations for its proper management.
The seminar, delivered by Dr. Huda Mahdi Younis, addressed the issue of medical waste from both scientific and practical perspectives. It explained the mechanisms through which medical waste affects public health, including the transmission of pathogenic agents, exposure to toxic substances, and radioactive contamination.
The seminar concluded by recommending that effective medical waste management should begin with segregation at the source and risk assessment, followed by safe storage and transportation in accordance with biological and radiological safety standards, and culminating in approved methods of final disposal.
