University of Basrah Organizes a Lecture on the Red Palm Weevil
The Palm Research Center at the University of Basrah organized a scientific lecture entitled “Red Palm Weevil: The Most Dangerous Pest Threatening Date Palms.”
The lecture aimed to introduce control programs for the Red Palm Weevil, which rely on integrating preventive and remedial measures, as well as raising farmers’ awareness and ensuring rapid intervention—an essential step in protecting date palms and preserving this important agricultural and economic resource.
Delivered by Dr. Ghazwan Faisal Khalaf, the lecture provided an overview of this serious pest and its significant impact on date palm trees. It highlighted the main symptoms appearing in advanced stages of infestation and emphasized the importance of early detection to limit the spread of the pest. The lecture also outlined control strategies within the framework of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), including preventive measures, regular monitoring, biological and chemical control methods, following established technical guidelines.
Additionally, the lecture addressed the severity of the Red Palm Weevil as one of the most destructive insect pests affecting palms, due to the internal nature of its infestation, which makes early detection particularly challenging.
