University of Basrah Organizes a Scientific Field Trip to the Samawah Desert
The Department of Sediments and Marine Bottoms at the Marine Science Center of the University of Basrah organized a geological field trip to the Samawah Desert.
The trip aimed at exploration, scientific research, and documenting unique geological formations and phenomena.
Led by Dr. Walaa Majid Khidr, the trip included a geological field survey of the area’s formations and an assessment of the expanding desertification, particularly in the Al-Ghar area and the main road of Basiyah. Sediment samples, sand dunes, rock specimens from several sites, and groundwater samples from a number of wells were collected. The trip also included a site visit to the historic Shakrah Palace, located 36 km northeast of Basiyah.
