The University of Basrah Organizes a Panel Discussion on Translation in the Abbasid Era
The Basrah and Arabian Gulf Studies Center at the University of Basrah organized a panel discussion entitled “The Development of the Translation Movement in the Early Abbasid Era,” as part of its academic activities aimed at highlighting pivotal milestones in the history of Arab-Islamic civilization.
The panel sought to examine the development of the translation movement during the early Abbasid period and to identify the most significant political, cultural, and scientific factors that contributed to its prosperity, as well as its role in transferring knowledge and sciences from other civilizations into the Arabic language.
The discussion, delivered by Assistant Lecturer Duaa Hussein Abduljalil, addressed the origins of translation and the stages of its development, with a focus on the role of the Abbasid caliphs in supporting this movement and the importance of scholarly institutions—most notably the House of Wisdom—in hosting scholars and translators. It also highlighted the impact of the translation movement in transmitting Greek, Persian, and other sciences and philosophies into Arabic, and the profound influence this had on shaping the scientific and intellectual renaissance of Arab-Islamic civilization.
