A Master’s Thesis at the University of Basrah Examines the Mineralogical Analysis of the Zubair Formation
A master’s thesis submitted to the College of Science at the University of Basrah investigated the mineralogical, geochemical, and petrophysical analysis of the Zubair Formation in the Zubair Oil Field, southern Iraq.
The thesis, presented by the student Rayan Hassan Ibrahim, aimed to understand the impact of mineral composition on reservoir rock performance, identify the most promising sandstone layers, and evaluate reservoir efficiency using well logs and laboratory analyses.
The thesis comprised four chapters in which the researcher discussed the lithological and mineralogical composition of the rocks, noting that the presence of heavy, bitumen-like hydrocarbons reflects secondary alteration processes that may reduce extraction efficiency, even within high-quality sandstone layers.
