The University of Basrah Organizes a Course on Unsupervised Classification of Satellite Imagery
The Marine Sciences Center at the University of Basrah organized a course entitled “Unsupervised Classification of Satellite Imagery: A Tool for Exploring Environmental Changes in Coastal Areas and River Deltas.”
The course aimed to introduce participants to the principles and techniques of unsupervised classification of satellite imagery and to employ it as an exploratory tool for understanding primary environmental patterns in coastal areas and river deltas. It also focused on detecting spatial variations and qualitative characteristics of different environmental elements, particularly in cases where sufficient field data is lacking and a preliminary study is required before conducting detailed field measurements.
The course, delivered by Dr. Adel Jassim Mohammed, included an explanation of the theoretical foundations of classification and its relationship to the stratified properties of water. Participants were trained on interpreting classification outputs, linking them to environmental phenomena, and highlighting the role of unsupervised classification in long-term environmental monitoring and in observing spatial and temporal changes in coasts and river deltas.
