University of Basrah Organizes a Training Course on the Effects of Oxygen Depletion in the Southern Marshes
The Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah organized a training course entitled “The Effects of Oxygen Depletion in the Southern Marshes: Causes and Mitigation Measures.”
The course aimed to equip concerned stakeholders with the necessary knowledge to take effective measures to preserve these unique marshland ecosystems.
The course, delivered by Dr. Ahmed Jasib Al-Shammari, highlighted key environmental causes of oxygen depletion, such as pollution, reduced water discharge, and organic decomposition, as well as their destructive impacts on aquatic organisms, plant life, and the overall environment. In addition, the course identified sustainable solutions, including improved water management, pollution treatment, and community awareness initiatives to protect this vital ecosystem. The proposed mitigation measures included restoring water flow, removing waste, supporting biological systems, and enhancing community awareness through training fishermen and farmers on sustainable practices that reduce environmental pressure on the marshes.
