Master’s Thesis at the University of Basrah Examines the Concept of Sacrifice in Contemporary Iraqi Poetry
A master’s thesis at the College of Education for Human Sciences, University of Basrah, examined “Sacrifice in Contemporary Iraqi Poetry: A Cultural Approach.”
The thesis, submitted by the student Abeer Ali Nima, aimed to explore the concept of sacrifice beyond its narrow ritualistic dimensions, presenting it as a cognitive entry point for understanding the nature of the relationship between human beings and the Absolute Divine. This relationship is manifested in religious texts, mythological narratives, and literary works.
The study concluded that sacrifice constitutes a cultural system that goes beyond ritual practice to reflect societal identity and the relationship between the self and the other. It oscillates between being a collective act that reinforces belonging and an individual act that embodies the tension between resistance and submission. Consequently, its meanings have transformed over time from symbols of surrender to broader horizons of freedom and rejection.
