University of Basrah Organizes Emergency and Response Plan in Scientific Laboratories
The Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah organized a course entitled "Emergency and Response Plan for Emergency Situations in Laboratories."
The course aimed to develop an emergency and response plan for laboratories, equipping staff with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively and safely handle potential incidents, whether chemical, biological, or natural. This aims to minimize damage, protect lives and property, and provide a safe working environment through training in proper procedures, leadership, and rapid decision-making during crises.
The course, presented by Dr. Bassam Rashid Ashour, Head of Scientific Laboratories at the Center, included enhancing researchers' ability to implement emergency policies and procedures; identifying and assessing potential laboratory hazards such as spills, fires, and biological contamination; developing comprehensive emergency plans encompassing evacuation, rescue, and communication; training researchers on how to act quickly and in a coordinated manner during crises using available resources; minimizing human and material losses; protecting the environment and research equipment; teaching leadership and rapid decision-making mechanisms; managing teams during disasters; and continuously emphasizing the importance of ensuring that plans and procedures remain effective and appropriate for changing laboratory conditions.
