University of Basrah Organizes Radiation Protection Course
The Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah organized a course entitled "Daily Protection from Exposure to Radioactive Doses at Levels That May Cause Cancer."
The course aimed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to reduce unnecessary exposure to low and chronic doses of radioactive materials in order to protect public health and reduce the risk of cancer.
The course, presented by Dr. Huda Rihan Al-Kaym, covered how low and continuous doses of radiation can damage DNA and increase the risk of developing cancer later in life. It also taught participants how to apply basic radiation protection principles, such as time and distance, and trained them on the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, aprons, protective clothing, and masks. Emphasis was placed on developing plans for dealing with accidental radiation exposure, reporting such incidents, and monitoring exposure levels for individuals working in this field, including measuring the annual dose. Participants also learned how to safely handle radioactive materials in medical, industrial, and oil and gas exploration environments.
