University of Basrah Discusses Comparison Between Pap Smear and Colposcopy
The College of Medicine at the University of Basrah discussed a research paper comparing Pap smear and colposcopy in the absence of HPV testing for the diagnosis of malignant and pre-malignant cervical lesions.
The research, presented by student Zajel Asaad Nasser, aimed to evaluate Pap smear and colposcopy in conjunction with histological examination results from abnormal Pap smears or colposcopy in the absence of HPV testing.
The research concluded that colposcopy has slightly higher accuracy than Pap smear, although histopathology remains the gold standard. The high prevalence of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN 2/3) and cancer highlights the importance of timely screening, along with the effectiveness of Pap smear and colposcopy, in resource-limited settings.
