University of Basrah Organizes a Course on Genetic Transformation in Bacteria
The Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah organized a course on genetic transformation in bacteria.
The course aimed to enable researchers to utilize bacteria as factories for producing genes and proteins in the fields of genetic engineering and biotechnology.
The course, presented by Dr. Mustafa Sami Fadagh, covered the molecular foundations of natural and industrial chemical and electrical transformation; increasing the efficiency of cells in DNA extraction; demonstrating how bacteria absorb free DNA from the surrounding environment and integrate it into their genome; methods for preparing bacterial cells, such as Escherichia coli, to become efficient and capable of receiving foreign DNA; techniques such as heat shock or electroporation for introducing plasmids; utilizing this process in gene cloning and protein production; understanding how antibiotic resistance spreads; and the mechanism for identifying mutated bacteria that have successfully acquired a plasmid using antibiotics or color indicators.
