Basra Studies Center Holds Workshop on Critical Discourse Analysis
The Basra and Arabian Gulf Studies Center at the University of Basrah organized a workshop entitled "Contexts of the Discourse Event: The Glass Room as a Model."
The workshop aimed to introduce Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as a methodological framework for understanding discourse events in community initiatives. The Glass Room initiative was used as a case study to examine the mechanisms of discourse production and the construction of its meanings within social and cultural contexts.
The workshop included a lecture by instructor Alia Hadi, who discussed the analysis of the various contexts that produce discourse and give it meaning. These contexts included the social and ideological context, the context of the actors, the authority of the event, and its role in directing reception and shaping the image of the initiative in the public consciousness. The workshop also focused on clarifying the concept of context in critical discourse analysis, revealing the underlying ideological dimensions of community discourse, and analyzing the role of influential figures in meaning-making. Participants were also trained to apply critical analysis tools to real-world examples.
