University of Basrah Contributes to Enriching FAO Scientific Databases
Researchers from the Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah have submitted their research, titled "Preliminary Assessment of Mitochondrial Genetic Diversity in Grouper Species in Iraqi Marine Waters of the Arabian Gulf," to the International Agricultural Sciences and Technology Information System (AGRIS). AGRIS is the global platform for agricultural science and technology information managed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
This submission is part of ongoing efforts to disseminate scientific knowledge about the genetic diversity of marine organisms in the Iraqi marine environment. The research was published in the Iraqi Journal of Aquaculture, Volume 23, Issue 1, 2026.
AGRIS is one of the most important global bibliographic information systems in the fields of agriculture, food, and related sciences. It provides open access to millions of scientific records from more than 150 countries worldwide, thus enhancing the international visibility of Iraqi scientific research and enabling scientists and other interested parties to access and benefit from the findings.
The research included a preliminary analysis of mitochondrial DNA genetic diversity in grouper species, revealing two distinct gene pools within the organic reefs. This provides important genetic information that may contribute to understanding the genetic structure and biodiversity of these species in the Arabian Gulf.
