University of Basrah Discusses Determinants of Hysterectomy in Pregnant Women Diagnosed with Placenta Accreta
A board research study at the College of Medicine at the University of Basrah examined the determinants of hysterectomy in pregnant women diagnosed with placenta accreta.
The study, conducted by student Shatha Fadhil Hamed, aimed to determine the incidence of hysterectomy among pregnant women with placenta accreta and to identify maternal, obstetric, and surgical factors associated with an increased risk of the procedure.
The research concluded that hysterectomy is a life-saving intervention in cases of placenta accreta, with its occurrence primarily influenced by the spectrum of placental adherence and maternal age. Early identification of high-risk cases and careful delivery planning in specialized multidisciplinary centers contribute to reduced morbidity and improved outcomes. The study also provides valuable local data for Basrah Governorate.
