University of Basrah Organizes Training Course on Heavy Element Determination Using Atomic Absorption
The Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah organized a training course entitled “Determination of Heavy Elements Using Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (FAAS)”.
The course aimed to equip participants with both practical and theoretical skills to accurately analyze toxic metals such as lead, cadmium, and copper in environmental and food samples. It also sought to qualify participants for work in environmental monitoring, food analysis, and research laboratories.
The course, delivered by Dr. Ahmed Yousif Hammoud, included practical training on operating the Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (FAAS) instrument and understanding its main components. Participants learned methods for digesting and processing various samples from soil, water, and tissues in preparation for analysis, as well as techniques for accurately determining heavy metal concentrations in unknown samples.
The training also covered the process of converting samples into aerosol and free atoms using an acetylene-air flame for elemental measurement, in addition to applying safety standards and adhering to laboratory safety procedures when handling concentrated acids and open flames.
