University of Basrah Organizes Awareness Seminar to Combat Violent Extremism
The Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah organized a seminar entitled "The Role of Institutions in Protecting Society from Extremist Ideology."
The seminar aimed primarily to enhance community awareness of the dangers of extremism and to intellectually fortify individuals, especially young people, by promoting the values of tolerance and moderation. It also aimed to activate the preventative role of educational, religious, and media institutions in developing joint strategies to reduce destructive ideologies and combat terrorism.
The course, presented by faculty member Zainab Fadhil Al-Tamimi, focused on mechanisms for preventing extremism, clarifying the concept of intellectual security, and fortifying the university community intellectually and behaviorally against extremist rhetoric. It also addressed the responsibilities of educational, security, and religious institutions in disseminating moderate thought and fostering a spirit of citizenship, promoting the values of coexistence and tolerance, rejecting hatred, and emphasizing the importance of dialogue as a key tool for unity and peace. The course emphasized combating extremism through monitoring and analyzing its activities, presenting alternative discourse in the media and on social media networks, and strengthening coordination among various relevant institutions—governmental, civil, and security—to develop integrated preventative policies. Furthermore, it discussed the psychological and social factors leading to extremism and the provision of appropriate interventions for vulnerable groups.
