Organized by the University of Basrah, the Marine Science Center held a training course entitled “Climate Change and Its Impact on Biodiversity.”
The course aimed to enhance scientific awareness of the mechanisms underlying global warming and to analyze its direct impacts on ecological and plant systems, with particular emphasis on adaptation and mitigation strategies.
Delivered by Dr. Abdul-Hussein Jaafar Abdullah, the course addressed the causes of climate change and its implications for ecosystem health and species distribution. It also examined sustainable solutions, the phenomenon of global warming, and greenhouse gases—particularly carbon dioxide and methane—as well as the natural and anthropogenic factors contributing to climate variability. In addition, the course explored shifts in the distribution of plant and animal species, the degradation of natural habitats that threaten species with extinction, and the broader impacts on plant biodiversity.
Furthermore, it highlighted practical measures to reduce environmental damage, including sustainable resource management, the development of disaster-resilient infrastructure, afforestation to curb emissions, investment in renewable energy, and the promotion of energy efficiency. The program also reviewed relevant international climate and environmental agreements.
