A master’s thesis submitted to the College of Arts at the University of Basrah examines the scribes of Basrah’s dīwāns and their role in public life up to 247 AH / 861 CE.
The thesis, presented by Ahmed Hassan Dahi, aims to elucidate the role of the dīwān scribes in Basrah until the mid-third century AH—a period that witnessed the consolidation of the Abbasid administrative apparatus and marked the height of Basrah’s scientific and cultural flourishing.
The study is structured into three chapters, in which the researcher discusses the province of Basrah, its administrative boundaries, the cities under its jurisdiction, and the emergence of the dīwāns within it.
