The University of Basrah Organizes a Seminar on Plant Disease Resistance
The College of Agriculture at the University of Basrah organized a seminar entitled “Plant Disease Resistance.”
The seminar, delivered by Dr. Layla Abdul Rahim Bunyan, aimed to clarify the concept of resistance as a natural trait resulting from the interaction between genetic and environmental factors, and to highlight its role in reducing disease incidence.
The session addressed the various types of resistance, classifying them into structural resistance and biochemical resistance.
Structural resistance included factors such as the timing and efficiency of stomatal opening, the thickness of the cuticle layer, and the rigidity of the outer epidermal cell wall. Biochemical resistance, on the other hand, involved the secretion of toxic compounds and the presence of defensive substances within plant cells, thereby enhancing the plant’s capacity to withstand pathogenic agents.
